The Cross of Peace Today

After completing its journey across Ukraine, The Cross of Peace arrived in Latvia, marking the beginning of its European chapter.

The Cross is currently on display at the Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Skaistkalne, Latvia.

An early Baroque masterpiece completed in 1692, the church is Latvia's second major Catholic pilgrimage destination after Aglona.

A Place for the Cross

The Cross of Peace was created to stand before people.

Cathedrals, churches and monasteries across Europe are invited to host the Cross, offering their communities a place for encounter, remembrance and prayer.

Standing four metres high, the Cross requires a setting capable of receiving a work of monumental scale and sacred character.

Each church that receives the Cross becomes part of its European story — carrying its message of peace from one community to another.

The Future Home of the Cross

Skaistkalne is planned as the permanent home of The Cross of Peace after the completion of its European journey.

A dedicated chapel is envisioned for the Cross — the flagship work of the Ashes of War series by Sergey Melnikoff (MFF).

33 steps for the years of Christ's earthly life

Thirty-three steps will lead to the chapel, one for each year of Christ's earthly life. The ascent is conceived as a symbolic path of Christian unity.

Following an ancient pilgrimage tradition, pilgrims will be able to ascend to The Cross of Peace on their knees.
