Cross of Peace

The Cross of Peace

Monumental sculptural composition

Sergey Melnikoff (MFF)

The Cross of Peace is a monumental sculptural composition created in Ukraine entirely from the physical remnants of Russia's war.

The four-metre Cross is made from metal pipes taken from buildings destroyed by Russian missile strikes. The life-size figure of Christ is assembled from 20,000 authentic fragments of artillery shells and finished in 999.9 fine gold.

Materials created for destruction have been given another form — not to conceal what they were, but to bear witness to what happened.

The Face of Christ

The face was not cast, carved or modelled from a conventional sculptural material.

Thousands of individual fragments of exploded munitions were selected and assembled by hand, layer upon layer, until the broken metal acquired human anatomy, expression and presence.

No fragment was melted down to erase its history. The violence remains visible in every surface of the face.

From a distance, Christ. Up close, the material of war.

The Witness

The Cross of Peace does not reconstruct an image of war. It contains its physical reality.

The metal that entered Ukraine as an instrument of destruction remains present in the work — transformed, but not disguised.

Here, the material of violence becomes the image of sacrifice. What was intended to destroy the human body is made to bear the body of Christ.

The war is not represented here. It is physically present.
